Vehicle Compatibility Guide: Toyota 4Runner

This guide helps you determine which racks and iKamper roof top tents are compatible with your Toyota 4Runner.

Updated today

There’s a reason the Toyota 4Runner is one of the most trusted vehicles for exploring off-pavement. It’s durable, capable, and supported by one of the widest aftermarket ecosystems out there. This guide focuses on the 5th-Generation 4Runner (2010–present), but most recommendations apply to earlier generations as well.

Mounting Options

The 4Runner supports multiple ways to mount a roof top tent—factory rails, aftermarket crossbars, and full rack systems. Each comes with its own benefits depending on the tent you plan to run.

The good news: the 4Runner community has nearly unlimited rack options, so finding a setup that suits your tent and use case is straightforward.

Factory Crossbars

The 5th-Gen 4Runner’s factory roof rails and crossbars are rated for 125–135 lbs of dynamic load (depending on 2WD vs. 4WD). This is right at the lower edge of what our lightest tents weigh—our X-Cover is 128 lbs and our Skycamp Mini models range from 125–140 lbs—so while a tent may technically sit within the limit, there’s no margin once you factor in hardware, bedding, or off-road use.

Because of this, we don’t recommend using the factory crossbars for mounting any iKamper tent. For proper support and long-term durability, upgrade to aftermarket crossbars or a full platform rack.

Aftermarket Modular Crossbars

Aftermarket crossbars that mount to the factory side rails offer a big step up in strength compared to the OEM setup. With the right weight rating, they can support any iKamper tent—Skycamp, BDV, or X-Cover series—without requiring a full platform rack.

They’re lightweight, affordable, and easy to install. Just make sure the crossbars you choose list a dynamic weight rating that meets or exceeds your tent’s specifications.

Full-Length Platform Racks

Platform racks replace the factory side rails and span the entire roof, creating a strong, stable mounting surface for a roof top tent. Designs vary slightly in height or profile depending on the manufacturer, but functionally they all provide the same core benefit: the highest load capacity and the most reliable support for any iKamper tent.

Why choose a platform rack:

  • Strongest and most stable base for rooftop tents

  • Excellent load distribution across the roof

  • Compatible with all iKamper tents

  • Supports accessories like awnings, recovery boards, and storage

  • Available in a range of profiles depending on your preferred fit and look

Things to keep in mind:

  • Some racks sit taller and may affect garage clearance

  • Wind noise can increase, but a fairing usually helps

  • Most importantly, always verify the rack’s dynamic weight rating to ensure it meets or exceeds the weight of your tent

Platform racks are available from many reputable manufacturers—just be sure to select one that clearly lists a dynamic load rating appropriate for your tent.

A Note on Moonroofs

Many 4Runners come with a factory sunroof. A roof top tent won’t interfere with the sunroof itself, but once a tent is mounted:

  • The sunroof can still tilt, but

  • It should not be fully opened, as it may contact the rack or mounting hardware.

If sunroof use is important to you, choose a rack and tent placement that keeps the mounting hardware positioned farther rearward for extra clearance.

Still Have Questions?

If you’re unsure about your 4Runner’s rack, crossbar spacing, or height, send photos of your roof rails or rack setup to support and we’ll verify compatibility.
