Vehicle Compatibility Guide: Rivian R1S

This guide helps you determine which racks and iKamper rooftop tents are compatible with your Rivian R1S. The R1S features a reinforced roof structure and strong factory rack options, making it a capable platform for rooftop tents with minimal modification.

Compatibility depends on rack placement, tent length, and load ratings. This guide explains how the factory crossbars work with iKamper tents, when alternative rack options may be useful, and how to choose a setup that is safe and practical for your vehicle.

This guide assumes a Rivian R1S equipped with a factory hard roof.

The Rivian R1S can support both Duo and Standard iKamper rooftop tents using the factory Rivian crossbars. Aftermarket crossbars or platform racks are optional and typically used for mounting preference or accessory integration rather than increasing tent compatibility.

The R1S uses a roof-mounted rack system only. Because the tent sits entirely on the roof, overall roof length and rack placement should be considered to minimize overhang and ensure safe weight distribution.

The Rivian R1S factory crossbars are the most common and straightforward mounting solution. They offer sufficient load ratings and spacing for rooftop tents when installed according to Rivian’s specifications.

Compatible iKamper tents with factory crossbars:

Aftermarket crossbars may be used when additional mounting flexibility or accessory compatibility is desired, but they do not expand the usable roof length.

Compatible iKamper tents with aftermarket crossbars:

Platform racks provide a continuous mounting surface and can improve stability or simplify accessory mounting. They do not increase roof length and are not required for tent compatibility on the R1S.

Compatible iKamper tents with platform racks:

Before installing a rooftop tent, always verify the dynamic roof load limit of your R1S and the load rating of your rack system. Static load ratings when parked are often higher, but only dynamic ratings apply while driving.

Always defer to the lowest-rated component in your setup.

Annex compatibility depends on the total height of the vehicle and rack setup. Measure from the ground to the base of the tent before planning to use an annex.

The standard iKamper ladder measures 90.5 inches (230 cm) and is suitable for setups up to 83 inches (211 cm). Taller rack setups may require the HC Ladder Extension, which adds an additional 12 inches (30 cm).

Awning compatibility depends on rack placement and rear liftgate clearance.

SUV roof setups do not allow forward over-cab extension.
Tent overhang should be minimized for safe driving and handling.
Rear liftgate clearance should be checked when mounting accessories.
