This guide helps you determine which racks and iKamper rooftop tents are compatible with your Chevrolet Colorado. The Colorado is a capable midsize truck that supports a wide range of rack styles and rooftop tent configurations when set up correctly.
Compatibility depends on rack type, rack height, bed length, and load ratings. This guide explains the common rack options for the Colorado, the benefits of each, and which iKamper tents are compatible so customers can confidently build a safe and functional setup.
This guide assumes a Chevrolet Colorado with an open bed and factory cab.
Quick Compatibility Summary
The Chevrolet Colorado can support both Mini and Standard iKamper rooftop tents. Cab-mounted racks and low-height bed racks are best suited for Mini tents, while full-height bed racks and canopy setups expand compatibility to full size tents. Full-height bed racks allow over-cab support and provide the greatest flexibility.
Bed-Mounted Rack Options
Mid-Height Bed Racks
Mid-height bed racks sit between the bed rails and cab height. They offer a balance between accessibility and compatibility but typically do not allow the tent to extend forward over the cab.
Mid-height racks pair perfectly with our compact tent lineup:
Past season iKamper tents that pair perfectly with Mid-Height racks:
Skycamp 2.0 Mini
X-Cover 2.0 Mini
iKamper tents that are incompatible with Mid-Height racks:
*The BDV series is not recommended for mid-height bed racks due to their length.
Safety Note:
Standard tents may be used on mid-height racks when bed length, rack spacing, and load ratings are sufficient and rear overhang is minimal. Excessive rear overhang is not recommended.
We don’t endorse any specific rack brands, but there are a few common ones we see used. As always, please, confirm that the rack’s dynamic load rating meets or exceeds the tent’s specifications before purchasing or installing an iKamper.

Full-Height / Cab-Height Bed Racks
Full-height bed racks align with or exceed cab height and allow the tent to extend forward over the cab. This configuration provides the greatest flexibility and is required for most longer tents.

Past season iKamper tents that pair perfectly with Mid-Height racks:
Skycamp 2.0 Mini
X-Cover 2.0 Mini
We don’t endorse a specific rack brand here, but here are a few common brands we see used. As always, confirm the rack’s dynamic load rating meets or exceeds the tent’s specifications:
Yakima; OverHaul HD
Leitner Design; ACS Forged
Victory 4x4; Heavy Duty Bed rack
Canopy / Camper Shell Options
Canopies mount over the bed and often include integrated or add-on crossbars. They provide weather protection while maintaining usable rack height and load capacity.
Important considerations:
Weight ratings: Especially for fiberglass canopies, verify load limits. Many require reinforced mounting rails for RTT use.
Aluminum shells: Options like SmartCap are popular because of their strength and consistent load ratings.

Cab-Mounted Rack Options
Cab-mounted racks sit directly on the cab roof. Because all weight is carried by the cab, both roof load ratings and cab length must be respected. Cab-mounted racks are best suited for setups where the tent fits fully within the cab footprint without excessive front or rear overhang.
Crew Cab vs Double Cab Consideration
Crew Cab models offer slightly more cab length than Double Cab models, which can affect compatibility with longer tents on cab-mounted racks. Cab-mounted setups should always be evaluated based on the actual front-to-back cab measurement.

A Note on Bed / Tonneau Covers
If you plan to run a bed cover, rooftop tent options can become significantly limited. Most bed rack systems require direct mounting to the bed rails or bed sides, which often conflicts with the mounting hardware and rail access needed for tonneau covers.
Even if both products fit the vehicle individually, they are typically not compatible when used together.
If keeping a bed cover is a priority, a cab or roof-mounted rack setup is generally the best alternative. This allows the bed cover to remain in place while still providing a secure and reliable mounting location for a rooftop tent.
Key considerations:
Garage clearance: Adding a rooftop tent and rack system increases overall vehicle height, which can limit access to garages, parking structures, and covered drive-throughs. Always measure your total vehicle height after installation and compare it against clearance limits to avoid accidental contact or damage.
Aerodynamics: Mounting a tent higher on the vehicle increases wind exposure, which can affect driving dynamics. Increased wind resistance may result in additional road noise, reduced fuel efficiency, and more noticeable crosswind sensitivity, especially at highway speeds.
This applies to Cab Racks, Canopies, and Full Height Bed Racks
Weight Capacity Considerations
Before installing a rooftop tent, always verify the dynamic load ratings of your vehicle, rack system, and mounting hardware. While static load ratings are often much higher when the vehicle is parked, only dynamic ratings apply while driving.
When evaluating compatibility, always defer to the lowest-rated component in your setup, as this determines the safe operating limit for the entire system.
Accessory Notes
Annex compatibility depends on the total height of the vehicle and rack setup. Measure from the ground to the base of the tent before planning to use an annex.
iKamper HC ladders measure 90.5 inches (230 cm) and is suitable for setups up to 83 inches (211 cm). Taller bed rack or canopy setups may require the HC Ladder Extension, which adds an additional 12 inches (30 cm).
Awning compatibility depends on rack style, mounting hardware, and tailgate clearance.
