Can I Mount My iKamper Tent Backwards?

We get this question a lot, and it’s a great one!

In most cases, we do not recommend mounting your iKamper tent backwards (meaning, with the ladder opening facing the rear of your vehicle). Each iKamper rooftop tent is engineered with specific aerodynamics, hinge placements, and weight distribution designed for the tent to open toward the passenger side by default.

However, we know that every vehicle and rack setup is unique! Here’s a breakdown to help you decide what’s possible for your setup:

When It Might Be Possible

You can mount your tent backwards if your rack system allows for proper support and clearance and you understand the trade-offs below. Some users choose to mount backwards for:

  • Specific vehicle layouts (like overland rigs with side gear or rooftop accessories)

  • Ease of access (depending on your camping setup or parking habits)

  • Aesthetic or directional preferences

If you choose this route, please make sure:

  • Your rack and mounting system fully support the tent in the reversed position.

  • The ladder can still deploy safely and reach the ground without obstruction.

  • You’re aware that the iKamper logo, locks, and hinges will be reversed, and the aerodynamics and water flow may differ slightly from intended design.

Important Considerations

  • Warranty: Mounting backwards does not automatically void your warranty, but any damage caused by incorrect installation or interference with other gear would not be covered.

  • Installation: Ensure that all brackets and mounting bolts are properly aligned and tightened.

  • Fitment: On certain vehicle racks or bed racks, the tent’s clamshell may not open fully when mounted backwards.
