How to Install a BDV Duo or Solo

Our BDV rooftop tents are designed with a universal mounting system, making them compatible with a wide range of racks β€” from standard cross bars to full roof rack systems and bed racks. Proper installation ensures the safety and stability of both the tent and your vehicle.

Rack & Cross Bar Guidelines

To safely mount your BDV Duo or Solo, make sure your rack or cross bars meet the following guidelines:

  • Dynamic Weight Capacity: Your rack should support the tent and occupants. Most BDV models require a dynamic load of at least 150 lbs; check your vehicle and aftermarket cross bar specifications.

  • Cross Bar Spacing: Ensure the distance between cross bars is sufficient to securely mount the BDV. A minimum spacing of 30" is recommended.

  • Bracket Compatibility: Use the mounting brackets included with your BDV tent. For most aftermarket cross bars, the standard BDV mounting brackets are compatible, but check dimensions to ensure a proper fit.

Tip: Always refer to your rack and vehicle manuals to confirm weight limits and spacing.

Installing on Different Rack Types

Mid-Height Bed Racks

  • Tent Compatibility: BDV Duo & Solo

  • Installation Tips: Center the tent on the crossbars, secure with the included brackets, and tighten all hardware evenly.

  • Special Considerations: If your rack is on the shorter side, the Annex Plus or ladder may require adjustment. Check clearance for folding and unfolding.

Full-Height Bed Racks

  • Tent Compatibility: BDV Duo & Solo

  • Installation Tips: Maximum clearance allows for full-size setup and ladder use. Follow standard bracket installation.

  • Special Considerations: Ladder extension may be needed depending on bed and rack height combined with the tent.

Cab Racks

  • Tent Compatibility: Solo recommended; Duo may fit depending on cab rack height

  • Installation Tips: Mount the tent as far back as possible to maintain cab access. Secure with all brackets and hardware.

  • Special Considerations: Ladder and Annex Plus compatibility may be limited. Check for interference with roof accessories.

Canopy / Bed Cover Options

  • Tent Compatibility: Solo only; Duo generally incompatible

  • Installation Tips: Ensure canopy can support weight; fiberglass canopies may have limits.

  • Special Considerations: Check clearance for folding/unfolding; ladder may not reach the ground on lower bed caps.

Helpful Tips

  • Always install with at least two people.

  • Regularly inspect all mounting hardware after installation and a few trips.

  • Verify total vehicle height with tent + rack + ladder to avoid low-clearance obstacles.

  • Consider a weatherproof cover for long-term mounted tents.
