Roof Top Tent Rainfly Guide

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The ripstop polyester rainfly adds an extra layer of weather protection beyond your tent’s canvas walls. Made from durable ripstop polyester with a waterproof coating and taped seams, it helps shed rain and moisture while remaining light enough to remove or roll up in good weather.

How to Care for Your Rainfly

Your rainfly takes the brunt of the elements — rain, snow, sun, condensation, and heat. It’s on the front line and will experience wear over time. The steps below can help extend its lifespan.

Dry it out after trips

Your rainfly takes the brunt of the elements — rain, snow, sun, condensation, and heat. It’s on the front line and will experience wear over time. The steps below can help extend its lifespan.

Limit extreme heat exposure

High heat accelerates fabric and coating degradation, especially when combined with moisture. Year-round mounting can make this hard to avoid, but reducing heat exposure whenever possible will help slow wear.

Use your ladder cover

The ladder’s rubber feet can rub against the rainfly. Combined with heat, this friction can speed up wear. Using the ladder cover helps protect the fabric in this high-contact area.

Ultimately, the rainfly is a wear item on your rooftop tent and will eventually need replacement. Good care and storage habits help delay that process as long as possible.

When to Replace

You may want to replace your rainfly when its integrity, function, or weather protection is compromised. Common signs include:

  • Holes, tears, cracking, or severe discoloration in the skylight (vinyl moon/sunroof window)

  • Holes, abrasion, or other damage to the polyester fabric

  • Worn hook-and-loop (Velcro) or damaged seams

For Skycamp 3.0 and Skycamp DLX series tents, updated color options are also available if you’d like a refreshed look along with a new rainfly.

How to Replace Your Rainfly

Replacing your rainfly is a straightforward process and can typically be done at home with no special tools. We recommend performing the replacement in a clean, dry area with the tent fully opened.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure your tent is fully deployed

  • Confirm you have the correct replacement rainfly for your tent model and generation

  • If you’re unsure which tent version you have, contact [email protected] before installing

Step-by-Step Replacement

  1. Remove the old rainfly
Remove all tension rods, unfasten any hook-and-loop (Velcro) attachments and unzip or detach the rainfly from the tent body.

  2. Inspect attachment points
Before installing the new rainfly, inspect the zipper track, seams, and attachment points to ensure they’re clean and free of debris.

  3. Attach the new rainfly
Starting at one corner, align the new rainfly and attach it using the zipper. Work evenly around the tent to avoid misalignment.

  4. Secure hook-and-loop sections
Press all Velcro sections firmly into place, ensuring even tension and coverage.

  5. Check fit and coverage
Open and close doors, windows, and awnings to confirm proper fit. The rainfly should sit evenly without excess slack or pulling.

  6. Final check
Confirm that all attachment points are secured before packing the tent away or heading out.

Note: If the rainfly does not align correctly or appears mismatched, stop installation and contact [email protected]. Using an incorrect rainfly can lead to improper fit or damage.

Warranty

The rainfly is considered a wear part on your rooftop tent. While it’s made from high-quality ripstop polyester with a waterproof coating, gradual wear from sun, heat, rain, and abrasion is normal over time.

That said, iKamper rainflies are covered by a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects. If you experience an issue within that period that appears related to materials or workmanship — not normal wear and tear — contact [email protected] and we’ll be happy to help.
